Lord of the Mysteries Special Episodes: City of Silver Trailer Review

The Lord of the Mysteries community is officially buzzing. After a stellar first season by B.CMAY PICTURES, international fans streaming on Crunchyroll finally have a concrete date for the next phase of the story. Tencent announced a set of three special episodes arriving this June 2026, starting with Episode 1: “City of Silver” on June 20, 2026, followed closely by the two-part special “The Marked Hunt.”

For web novel readers, this news is a massive relief. Season 1 deliberately focused on the Tingen arc, leaving several vital, world-building subplots on the cutting room floor to maintain narrative pacing. Now, these canon special episodes are stepping in to fill those exact gaps before Season 2 drops, adapting the heavily skipped Volume 1 content.

But adapting Cuttlefish That Loves Diving’s masterpiece is no small feat. The Lord of the Mysteries web novel is universally praised for its complex magic system, Lovecraftian cosmic horror, and dense Victorian-steampunk atmosphere. With the latest trailers showcasing the grim realities of the Forsaken Land of God, a burning question remains: can a 3D donghua truly capture the novel’s pure gothic madness?

1. Entering the Cursed Bastion: Visualizing the Forsaken Land of God

The centerpiece of the new trailer is our first look at the City of Silver, a sunless, cursed bastion trapped within a desolate region isolated from the rest of the world. In the novel, this setting relies heavily on psychological dread—a place where the sky is permanently pitch-black, lit only by frequent, eerie flashes of lightning, and where humanity survives on the brink of mutation and madness.

Translating this type of environmental atmospheric storytelling into 3D animation is incredibly difficult, but B.CMAY PICTURES seems to have leaned heavily into high-contrast shading and desolate architectural design. The brief glimpses of Derrick Berg (the future “The Sun” of the Tarot Club) capture the sheer, exhausting weight of surviving in a land abandoned by the gods. The scale of the city feels appropriately oppressive, matching the gothic, grimdark aesthetic that fans have been fiercely protective of.

2. Setting Up the Tarot Club’s First Big Triumph: The Marked Hunt

While the “City of Silver” special will deliver heavy lore and historical exposition above the undying gray fog, the remaining two episodes—titled “The Marked Hunt”—will pivot back to high-stakes supernatural action in the foggy streets of the Loen capital, Backlund.

For fans who felt the Tarot Club meetings in Season 1 were a bit too brief, “The Marked Hunt” promises to deliver the exact payoff we’ve been waiting for. The trailer drops massive breadcrumbs for the Vice Admiral Qilangos arc, a crucial storyline where the paths of multiple Beyonders collide.

  • The Proposition: Alger Wilson (“The Hanged Man”) sets the stakes by targeting the wind-blessed killer, Qilangos.
  • The Hunt: Audrey Hall (“Justice”) utilizes her aristocratic status to weave through Backlund’s high society, bringing beloved fan-favorite Beyonder duos Fors Wall and Xio Derecha into the fold.
  • The Divinity: Klein Moretti, acting behind the scenes as the enigmatic The Fool, coordinates the pieces on the board while seeking the intervention of his mysterious mentor, Mr. Azik.

The quick action cuts in the trailer showcase B.CMAY’s signature kinetic choreography. The visual effects for Beyonder abilities look incredibly crisp, proving that 3D animation can handle the fluid, abstract nature of Lord of the Mysteries’ power pathways without looking like a stiff video game cutscene.

3. The Balanced Verdict: Can the Donghua Live Up to the Novel?

While the production quality looks movie-level, adapting this specific chunk of the web novel comes with intrinsic flaws that the donghua will have to actively fight against.

The Pacing Challenge: The City of Silver storyline is dense with lore, internal monologues, and world-building mythology. In text form, this slow-burn mystery is mesmerizing. In a fast-paced episodic animation format, there is a very real risk that the emotional weight of Derrick’s haunting tales might get condensed down into rushed exposition to favor the action sequences of the Qilangos hunt. Furthermore, anime-only viewers might find the sudden shift in focus away from Klein’s immediate journey slightly jarring.

However, the strengths displayed in the trailer heavily outweigh these concerns. By splitting this unresolved content into three dedicated specials instead of cramming them into a mainline season, the creators are giving these essential arcs room to breathe. The sound design, the oppressive color grading, and the sheer detail hidden in Backlund’s foggy alleyways indicate that the team deeply respects the source material’s psychological horror roots.

Ultimately, these specials look like a stellar, essential bridge that will satisfy novel purists and gear up anime fans for the gothic chaos of Lord of the Mysteries Season 2.

What are your thoughts on the new character designs for Fors and Xio? Do you think the 3D animation style does justice to the Forsaken Land of God? Let me know your theories in the comments below!
