Why Journal with Witch Beat Frieren: My Winter 2026 Anime Rankings

The Winter 2026 anime season was defined by a beautiful, high-stakes tension. On one side, we had the “Year of the Sequel,” with juggernauts like Jujutsu Kaisen and Frieren pushing the boundaries of TV animation. On the other, we saw the rise of understated, artisanal storytelling that prioritized character interiority over spectacle. After much deliberation, here is the definitive breakdown of the titles that defined the season.

1. Journal with Witch

Taking the top spot is Journal with Witch. In a season dominated by Cursed Techniques and Magical Adventure, this gem stood out for its profound groundedness. It tackles grief not as a plot device, but as a living, breathing character. While the deliberate pacing might test the patience of those used to high-octane plots, it is precisely that “quiet magic” and artisanal focus on the mundane that makes the emotional payoff so resonant. It is a healing anime that isn’t afraid to show the messiness of recovery.

2. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2

Frieren Season 2 - Revolte vs Genau and Stark

Frieren Season 2 remains the gold standard for high-fantasy world-building. This season’s focus on the Stark and Fern dynamic added a layer of warmth to the show’s trademark melancholic atmosphere. Madhouse continues to deliver a technical masterclass, proving that a story about the passage of time can be just as gripping as any battle shonen. It narrowly missed the top spot only because Journal with Witch offered a slightly more unique, fresh perspective on the “healing” genre.

3. Jujutsu Kaisen: The Culling Game Part 1

MAPPA at its most experimental, Jujutsu Kaisen: The Culling Game Part 1 was a dizzying, kinetic ride. The sheer scale of the sorcery battles is a marvel of modern animation, though the breakneck speed and dense power systems can occasionally feel overwhelming for the casual viewer. It’s a technical powerhouse that rewards deep attention, successfully transitioning the series into its most complex and brutal narrative arc yet.

4. Oshi no Ko Season 3

Oshi no Ko Season 3

Oshi no Ko Season 3 continues to be the most stressful yet addictive critique of the entertainment industry. This season delved deeper into the psychological toll of fame, balancing its vibrant aesthetic with increasingly dark thematic undertones. While the “revenge” plot moves at a measured pace, the character studies—particularly regarding the internal pressures of the idol world—remain sharp, cynical, and deeply compelling. Plus, we’ve finally got the biggest reveal of the series this season.

5. Golden Kamuy: The Final Season

Fate strange Fake anime

It is bittersweet to see Golden Kamuy reach its final stretch. This season maintained the series’ incredible identity as a historical survivalist drama that can pivot from gruesome violence to absurdist comedy in a single breath. The hunt for the gold has never felt more urgent, and the show’s commitment to Ainu cultural representation and “unhinged” character dynamics remains unmatched in the medium.

6. Fate/strange Fake

Fate/strange Fake delivered exactly what fans of the franchise crave: a high-budget, chaotic Holy Grail War with massive stakes. The cinematic soundtrack and high-quality production values elevate what could have been a standard battle royale into something far more atmospheric. While the sprawling cast can make it difficult to ground the emotional stakes, its sheer spectacle and strategic depth keep it firmly in the “must-watch” category.

7. Fire Force Season 3 Part 2

Fire Force Shinra Banshoman

Fire Force continues to boast some of the most creative sound design and visual effects in the industry. Part 2 of the third season brought the overarching mystery of the Adolla Burst into sharper focus. Though the series sometimes struggles with tonal consistency between its fanservice and its heavy religious themes, the fluid animation and explosive fight choreography remain top-tier. And finally, that’s SOUL RESONANCE antics, yes officially Fire Force had been connected to Soul Eater world.

8. Hell’s Paradise Season 2

Hell’s Paradise Season 2

Following the survivors on Kotaku, Hell’s Paradise Season 2 expanded the lore of the Elixir of Life with striking, floral-horror imagery. The introduction of new Yamada Asaemon and Tensen members kept the tension high. The arrival of a secondary landing party led by the ruthless Shugen drastically raises the stakes, introducing a “justice” so uncompromising it poses a threat as lethal as the island’s monsters. While the survivors’ tactical mastery of Tao to outmaneuver the Tensen and secure the Elixir is undeniably thrilling, the show’s shift from survival horror to a complex, multi-faction war proves its greatest strength, even if the dense lore occasionally slows the breakneck pace.

9. Sentenced to Be a Hero

Sentenced to Be a Hero Kivia

As one of the season’s darker horse entries, Sentenced to Be a Hero offers a gritty, cynical take on the “hero vs. demon king” trope. Sentenced to be a Hero Season 1 offers a haunting dissection of weaponized morality and a corrupt society where “heroism” is a punishment, though its heavy-handed cynicism may feel relentlessly bleak to some. Despite the agonizing emotional toll on characters like Kivia and Rajit, the series remains a compelling watch for its fearless exploration of human conflict and the chilling parallels it draws to modern reality.

10. Tamon’s B-Side & Medalist Season 2 (Tie)

Winter 2026 anime Medalist Season 2

Winter 2026 anime Tamon's B-side

Rounding out the list is a fascinating tie. Tamon’s B-Side continues to offer a hilarious yet biting look at the gap between an idol’s public persona and their private reality. Meanwhile, Medalist Season 2 remains a visual triumph; its depiction of figure skating is filled with fluid, gorgeous character acting that captures the literal and figurative “ice-cold” pressure of competitive sports. Both shows prove that character-driven dramas can be just as intense as any supernatural battle.

Winter 2026 reminded us that quality isn’t just about budget; it’s about the soul of the story. Whether you’re here for the “Culling Game” massacres or the quiet scratching of a witch’s pen, there was something truly special for everyone.
