The award-winning sci-fi novel The Three-Body Problem is getting a donghua adaptation and after the long wait since its initial announcement in 2019, the series is finally scheduled for release this 2022, to the delight of so many fans and viewers.
The series had been one of the most anticipated donghua by many viewers since its first announcement and despite all the delays in the production, the moment that we are all waiting for is about to come. Adapted from the novel of the same title by Liu Cixen, The Three-Body Problem is the first novel of the trilogy called the Remembrance of Earth’s Past as the story had been set in the distant future. However, due to the popularity of the first novel, the trilogy is often called or referred to as The Three-Body Problem.
Here’s a bit of background about the novel, it was originally serialized in Science Fiction World in 2008 and became one of the most successful Chinese science fiction novels of the decade. The Three-Body Problem also became the first ever Asian novel to win a Hugo Award for Best Novel and was nominated for the Nebula Award for Best Novel after Ken Liu translated it into English in 2014.
Synopsis
1967: Ye Wenjie witnesses Red Guards beat her father to death during China’s Cultural Revolution. This singular event will shape not only the rest of her life but also the future of mankind. Four decades later, Beijing police ask nanotech engineer Wang Miao to infiltrate a secretive cabal of scientists after a spate of inexplicable suicides. Wang’s investigation will lead him to a mysterious online game and immerse him in a virtual world ruled by the intractable and unpredictable interaction of its three suns. In November 2019 during their annual event that year, the donghua adaptation had teased by Bilibili and it was originally scheduled for release in 2021. However, the year ended and no Three-Body Problem had been released by Bilibili, only to be reconfirmed for the 2022 donghua lineup of the Chinese video-sharing company.
Now, what’s even more amazing is that The Three-Body Problem is also scheduled to get an American TV series by Netflix with big names such as David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo as executive writers and producers.
Animation Studio & Release Date

However, The Three-Body Problem release had been postponed and got rescheduled for release on December 10.
