Han Li’s Role in the Mulan War Arc: How the Cautious Protagonist Profits from Chaos

The wait is finally over, xianxia enthusiasts! After a tense four-month production hiatus, our favorite black-skinned, hyper-cautious cultivator has officially returned to our screens. A Record of a Mortal’s Journey to Immortality (Fanren Xiu Xian Zhuan) kicked off its highly anticipated summer season by plunging viewers straight into the opening salvos of one of the source novel’s most iconic conflicts: the devastating Mulan War Arc.

For hundreds of episodes, we have watched Han Li navigate the cutthroat world of the Tiannan continent by adhering to a singular life philosophy: if the risk outweighs the immediate benefit, run away. But as the borders collapse and the massive nomadic armies of the Mulan Tribes launch a full-scale invasion against the Nine Nations Union, even the ultimate master of escaping is forced onto the front lines.

Let’s break down Han Li’s tactical role in this massive regional conflict, how his newly consolidated Nascent Soul stage powers measure up against the unique magic of the enemy, and how Studio Original Force is shifting the story’s pacing to deliver absolute peak cinema.

Why the Ultimate Lone Wolf Can’t Escape the Front Lines in the Mulan War Arc?

If you have been following Han Li’s progression across our previous character deep-dives, you know he doesn’t get out of bed without a guaranteed profit. So, what triggers his direct involvement in a meat-grinder of a war that is claiming the lives of countless high-tier cultivators?

The conflict stems from pure desperation. The Mulan Prairie is an impoverished, resource-starved wasteland. Driven by a severe shortage of spirit stones and elemental veins—and squeezed from the other side by the hostile Soaring Tribes—the Mulan Tribes have forged a desperate alliance with the external Yin Sifting Sect. Their objective? Complete conquest of the fertile Tiannan territories.

Han Li, now established as a revered Martial Ancestor of the Drifting Cloud Sect, quickly realizes that a total systemic collapse means his own closed-door cultivation will be permanently disrupted. More importantly, large-scale war means rare battlefield resources, ancient treasures, and chaotic opportunities that a rogue genius can exploit under the cover of darkness.

Early Nascent Soul vs. Mulan “Spell Warriors”

The battlefield dynamics of this arc showcase why this series features one of the most logically sound power systems in modern donghua. The Mulan invaders do not fight like standard cultivators. Instead, their elite are known as Spell Warriors.

While their underlying progression mirrors traditional cultivation ranks, Mulan Spell Warriors largely bypass external enchanted tools and talismans. Instead, they utilize advanced, environment-blending “Spirit Techniques” that allow them to channel the raw elemental power of the prairie.

This creates an incredible tactical match-up for Han Li’s newly attained Nascent Soul stage arsenal:

  • The Divine Devilbane Lightning: Naturally counters the dark, demonic sword Qi utilized by the high-ranking spell warriors.
  • The Nineclowds Bamboo Swords: While Han Li is still gathering rare materials to forge his ultimate, world-shattering sword formation, his current lightning-infused blades allow him to pressure mid-stage Nascent Soul combatants like the fierce Nangong Que.
  • The Weeping Soul Beast (Ti Hun): Keep a very close eye on this spiritual beast as the war intensifies. Its innate ability to target and devour souls makes it the ultimate hard-counter to the massive corpse armies and spiritual summons brought forth by the Mulan Saintess, Le Yun.

Rather than overpowering his opponents with unearned main-character plot armor, Han Li’s combat sequences in the war rely entirely on battlefield positioning, information control, and laying meticulous traps using Silver Moon’s illusions.

Novel vs. Donghua: Did Studio Original Force Master the Pacing?

Adapting this portion of Wang Yu’s original web novel is an incredibly tall order. In written form, the war chapters are dense, heavily macro-focused, and occasionally slow down to explain the movements of hundreds of thousands of background cultivators.

Thankfully, Studio Original Force has made brilliant pacing adjustments for the animation. By utilizing top-tier motion capture and highly dynamic camera-work, the donghua successfully grounds the massive scale of the Tiannan vs. Mulan war through intimate, high-stakes character encounters. Powerful female cultivators like Nangong Que are given spectacular, front-line combat choreography that beautifully expands upon their brief literary descriptions. The production team has trimmed the fat of the military movements, choosing instead to focus on the breathless, high-intensity choreography of peak xianxia warfare.

How do you think Han Li will exploit the chaos of the front lines to secure his next major cultivation breakthrough? Let’s talk about it in the comments below!
